Of cholesterol frommevalonic acid 21 ; . Also, peroxisomal and microsomal samples plus cytosol incubated without ATP and NADP showed no conversion. Microsomal Contribution to Cholesterol Synthesis in Peroxisomal Fractions-Since the purified peroxisomal fractions used in this study contained 5-10% microsomal contamination, we wanted to verify that this microsomal contribution was not responsible for the rate of synthesis observed in the peroxisomal fractions. Microsomal protein 0.08 mg ; equivalent to the maximum found in any of the peroxisomal samples was incubated under standard assay conditions in the presence of 1 mg of cytosolic protein as described, with the following modifications. In order to mimic the peroxisomal fraction as closely as possible, the incubation mixture also contained Nycodenz 4% w v final concentration ; , the same concentrationas found in the peroxisomal samples, plus added boiled protein, to bring the final protein concentration 111. Ferent techniques, such as the carotid baroreflex HR response to neck chamber suction 14, 17, 25 ; , plasma urinary catecholamine levels 18, 37 ; , and HR spectral analysis 1, 37 ; , have been employed to quantitatively evaluate autonomic function. However, these techniques are limited, in that they are affected by factors other than alterations in autonomic tone e.g., respiration ; and or they cannot accurately measure sympathetic and parasympathetic tone separately 27 ; . As result, different studies using the above-mentioned techniques have reached inconsistent conclusions regarding the impact of microgravity exposure on sympathetic function 22, 31, 37 ; . In this study, we applied the cardiovascular system identification CSI ; technique to quantify sympathetic and parasympathetic responsiveness with regard to HR regulation. The CSI technique 29, 30 ; evaluates the relation between second-tosecond fluctuations in physiological signals, such as HR, arterial blood pressure ABP ; , and instantaneous lung volume ILV ; , to enable dynamic assessment of important physiological mechanisms without perturbing normal system operation. CSI assumes that the couplings of the small spontaneous fluctuations in these signals about their mean values may be represented by a linear, time-invariant model. This model will generally change when there is a change in physiological state. The linearity assumption has been tested and validated 10 ; . Figure 1 depicts the closed-loop model of HR and blood pressure regulation. The model consists of four couplings, circulatory mechanics, HR baroreflex, ILV 3 HR, and ILV 3 ABP; their transfer properties are represented below in terms of impulse response functions. Impulse response is defined by the response of the coupling mechanism to an input at time 0 with unit area and arbitrarily short duration. Circulatory mechanics impulse response represents the ABP wavelet generated with each cardiac contraction. The input to circulatory mechanics, the pulsatile HR PHR ; , is defined as a train of impulses occurring at the times of contraction of the ventricle. It may be constructed from the times of the occurrence of the QRS complexes in the ECG. Circulatory mechanics primarily reflect the mechanical properties of the heart, great vessels, and peripheral circulation. The amplitude of the circulatory mechanics impulse response is related to stroke volume, and the characteristic decay time of this impulse response is related to the product of peripheral resistance and.

Was most extensive in regions of low vascularization. A similar pattern of Glut expression has been observed in brain tumors 9 ; , and human mammary tumors 7 ; . In this study, immunostaining techniques revealed that tumor cells adjacent to blood vessels in LX-1, DLD-2 and MX-1 all had similar staining intensity for Glut-1. LX-1, MX-1 and DLD-2 all had higher expression of Glut-1 in poorly vascularized regions. The stain ing of LX-1 was the most intense Fig. 5 A-D ; . It is possible that LX-1 tumor cells express more Glut under stress than cells in the other tumors. A transformation-specific upregulation of Glut should occur uniformly throughout the tumor and be apparent on cells adjacent to blood vessels. Biofeedback medi ated upregulation of Glut would be expected to occur in poorly vascularized regions. Thus, it appeared that Glut were upregulated in a biofeedback mediated response in all tumor xenograft models and that this response was more extensive in LX-1. There are five isoforms of Glut which have been sequenced and characterized. Isoforms 1 and 3 are most commonly upregulated in tumors 7, 9, II ; . With antibodies directed against isoforms 1-5 we found that only Glut-1 were significantly expressed in LX-1 and MX-1 tumors. DLD-2 also expressed Glut-1. Only human xenogran tissues were tested because the antibodies available were directed against human Glut. Excess antigen was able to inhibit staining, indicating the Glut-1 antibody had a specific interaction with Glut-1. Tumor Targeting LX-1 appeared to be an excellent model to determine whether targeting Glut in tumors would lead to high retention of agents which bind to Glut. Thus, the biodistribution of agents which bind to Glut such as [125I]HPP-forskolin and [3H]cytochalasin B was measured in LX-1. Agents known to target tumors such as [3H]2-DG and [I25l]iododeoxyuridine IUDR ; were studied for comparison. The concentration of [3H]-2-DG in LX-1 was well above blood values at all time points. Tumor-to-blood ratios in [I25I]IUDR treated animals were high indicating that and hydrea.
SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER AND COOL Saturday night is coming, say, mamma, did I hear you say my white shirt had been washed and cleaned, my friends that you know are already there and phoned me to say that my Juliet at her balcony was seen. What causes retention times to shift when system backpressure increases? The effect is most pronounced when the HPLC pump used is equipped with a pulse-damping device. These devices are commonly used in many HPLC systems to minimize pressure pulsations, generally caused by the pump. However, there are some drawbacks to using a pulse damper. In particular, a pulse damper not only increases the gradient delay volume of the system, but this delay volume is also dependent on system backpressure. This dependence on system backpressure is explained by examining the function of a pulse damper. By design, the eluent chamber of a pulse damper expands to "absorb" a momentary increase in pressure i.e., a pressure pulse ; . Therefore, when a permanent pressure increase occurs, the pulse damper will expand permanently, thus increasing the delay volume. If the delay volume increases, this results in an increase in the amount of time taken for the gradient formed within the pump to reach the column. This additional time delay manifests itself in an increase in the retention times of the analytes. Thus, the use of a pulse damper will yield increasing retention times with increasing pressure.
From the floristic study it is clear that this sacred grove is one of the remarkable treasurehouses of biodiversity of north Kerala. Aravanchalkavu, a midland laterite grove, harbours about 142 species of plants. This sacred grove represents semi-evergreen forest, myristica swamps, and dry deciduous and grassland type of vegetation. The different plant groups like trees, climbers, stragglers, woody climbers, epiphytes, hydrophytes and parasites constitute the flora. The peninsular Indian endemics such as Goniothalamus cardiopetalus, Holigarna arnottiana, Holigarna beddomei, Hopea parviflora, Jasminum malabaricum, Knema attenuata, Lepidagathis keralensis, Loesneriella arnottiana, Melastoma malabathricum, Myristica malabarica, and Strychnos aenea are the important species of this grove. Top canopy consists of Diospyros buxifolia, Terminalia paniculata, and the like. Myristica malabarica and Knema attenuata represent Myristica swamp. On the sides of the stream Pandanus tecotorius is dominant. A recently reported laterite species called Lepidagathes keralensis Acanthaceae ; , Curcuma oligantha, Curcuma oligantha var. lutea are also reported from here. In wet season good growth of ground orchid Malaxis rheedii is noticed. Woody climbers like Strychnos aenea, Dalbergia horrida var horrida, Gnetum ula, Calicopteris floribunda, Anamirta cocculus etc. are growing abundantly. Paliyerikkavu is a typical example of a Myristica swamp forest. A south Indian endemic species Myristica fatua var. magnifica is recently reported from this grove. Besides this species Myristica malabarica, Knema attenuata and another endangered species called Syzygium travancoricum represent the Myristica swamp flora in this kavu. Syzygium travancoricum is a western-ghat endemic plant in the south, once considered as extinct due to inadequate regeneration. The other endemic species found in the grove are Cinnamomum malabathrum, Gymnostachyum febrifugum, Holigarna arnottiana Jasminum malabaricum, Knema attenuata, Loesneriella arnottiana, Myristica fatua var. magnifica, Myristica malabarica, Strychnos aenea, Syzygium travancoricum and Vateria indica. Aquatic herbs like Nymphaea stellata, Nymphoides cristata, Cryptocoryne spiralis, Utricularia flexuosa, and Rotala rotundifolia are found in the stream. Abundant growths of woody climbers like Gnetum ula and Dalbergia horrida var. horrida, Climbing pteridophyte, Stenochlaena palustris are other attractions of the grove. Even though more than 100 species are found in the grove, the major parts of the grove are occupied by the myristica species. Edayilekadu is a coastal grove with cane breaks a portion of the area fully occupied by cane ; . More than 100 species are recorded from this grove. The soil is sandy. The kavu is situated just about half a km from the sea and is almost at sea level. Important species growing here are Hopea ponga, Diospyros peregrina, Madhuca longifolia, Madhuca neerifolia, and Syzygium zeylanicum. Evergreen plant species like Cinnamomum malabathrum and Cinnamomum verum are also reported. Another peculiarity of the grove is the presence of endemic orchids like Nervilea praeneana, N. infundibulifolia and Malaxis rheedii. Abundant growths of these orchids are noticed during the season. A very thick patch of Calamus rotang is found on one side of the grove associated with a pteridophyte climber Stenochalena palustris. The border of the kavu is demarked by the growth of Madhuca neerfolia, Hopea and hydroxyurea.

Registry Registry ; , which is a US based registry designed to monitor planned or unplanned pregnancies exposed to adalimumab when used to treat rheumatoid arthritis although pregnant women who have been exposed to adalimumab in association with treatment for any other disease will also be followed. The primary objective of the Registry is to detect any potential increase in the risk of birth defects, specifically a pattern of anomalies, in exposed pregnancies. Secondary objectives are to evaluate the potential effect of exposure on other adverse pregnancy outcomes including reduced birth size and preterm delivery. The primary goal of this registry is to conduct an observational, controlled cohort study which will involve follow-up of live born infants to one year of age. The Humira adalimumab ; Pregnancy Exposure Registry is sponsored by Abbott Laboratories and conducted by the OTIS Research Group as an integrated project within the existing OTIS Rheumatoid Arthritis in Pregnancy Project that is currently sponsored by Aventis Pharmaceuticals. The Rheumatoid Arthritis in Pregnancy Project was established by OTIS in 1998 and continues to be administered by investigators at the coordinating site located at the University of California, San Diego. The contact number for these studies is 877 ; 311-8972. Enrollment for The Asthma Medications in Pregnancy Study ended in June 2003. At that time, 1400 women were enrolled and outcome data have been collected on 1102 women. Preliminary results of this study were presented by Robert Felix at the Teratology Society Meeting in June. This year OTIS held its Mid-Year Research Committee Meeting jointly with the National Birth Defects Prevention Network NBDPN ; in Salt Lake City, Utah between January 20th and 23rd. Meeting jointly with the NBDPN gave OTIS members an opportunity to network with NBDPN and other organizations, such as March of Dimes, The Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs, and CDC's Environmental Health Tracking, that share a similar mission. OTIS has added five more pediatricians to conduct dysmorphology exams for its studies: Drs. Karen Grippe, Carole Clercuzio, Luanne Hudgins, David Stevenson, and Keith Vaux. Part of the Research meeting was spent in training these newly-added pediatricians in the OTIS dysmorphology exam protocol and to evaluate reliability between examiners. Four sets of parents kindly volunteered to have their infants examined by each of the pediatricians. The 17th International Conference of OTIS will be held in conjunction with the Teratology Society between June 25-28, 2004 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Dr. James Hanson, Acting Director, Center for Developmental Biology & Perinatal Medicine, National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, has been invited to give the Thomas H. Shepard Lecture. Dr. Sonja Rasmussen, who is with the NCBDDD, will be giving a talk on maternal obesity and pregnancy; Dr. Elaine Faustman has been asked to give a talk on pharmacogenomics and teratology; and Dr. Robert Brent will be talking about the difficulties in interpreting spontaneous abortion rates. OTIS will also have a session on breastfeeding issues and Dr. Thomas Hale, author of the well-known book, Medications and Mother's Milk, has agreed to give a talk on this topic. Molly Pessl, a lactation consultant at the University of Washington, will be speaking on the practicality of advice such as "pumping-and-dumping" and breastfeeding problems in premature infants. Back by popular demand, the FDA CDER will put together another panel session similar to what was done at last year's meeting with the pregnancy labeling issue. This time, however, the panel will discuss drug use during lactation and what the FDA is doing with respect to this. Drug therapies for RA include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDS ; , disease modifying antirheumatic drugs DMARDS ; , and, most recently, biologics. Biologics currently on the market for RA target immune messengers called cytokines, which promote the damaging inflammatory process, and include anti-tumor necrosis factor TNF ; drugs infliximab Remicade ; , etanercept Enbrel ; , adalimumab HUMIRA ; and anti-interleukin-1 drugs anakinra KINERET ; . Biologics are typically reserved for patients with moderate to severe RA who require add-on therapy, estimated to be approximately 40 percent of the RA population. Large Unmet Need In The Rheumatoid Arthritis Community While biologics have been a major advancement for RA patients, a 2004 survey conducted by Harris and the Arthritis Foundation revealed a large unmet need for patients with moderate to severe RA. Two-thirds of the 500 people surveyed indicated they still experienced pain, stiffness, and fatigue on a daily basis. In addition, 56 percent of those taking a biologic and 57 percent of those taking DMARDS ranked overall quality of life at six or less on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the best. In a 2003 MEDACorp survey, physicians estimated that 39 percent of all RA patients that start anti-TNF therapy do not achieve adequate response or become refractory to the drug class. Thus, it is estimated that approximately 42 percent of the growing RA patient population taking anti-TNF therapies may be switched to alternative biologics as they come on the market.
In our Pharmaceutical Products Group: We introduced two newly approved uses for our anti-TNF biologic agent, Humira: psoriatic arthritis and early rheumatoid arthritis, which should help Humira further increase its market share. We also filed for approval of Humira to treat ankylosing spondylitis, and we continue to develop this remarkable medication for still more uses to help more patients. We launched Depakote ER for mania in bipolar disorder, a more convenient form of our versatile medication for epilepsy and migraine headache prevention.

Assuring high coverage during the annual rounds of mass drug distribution. The chronic forms of the disease, elephantiasis and hydrocoele, continue to have a major impact on patients and their families. In the past, very little was done to manage such chronic cases. Recently, bacterial `super infection' of the skin has been recognized as a significant factor in producing lymphoedema and elephantiasis, and in compounding the damage caused by the parasites. Regular and sustained washing of the affected areas and use of antibiotic ointments can slow or significantly reduce the progression of the disease and reduce the size of the lymphoedema and hyaluronan.
