Martha Walswick is a member of the Schaner family, who sent eight sons to Servite. Her sons, Stephen '02 and Eric '04, are also Men of Servite.The nine Walswick children lost their father, Greg, to brain cancer last summer.The family has always been a treasured part of the Servite community, so it was gratifying to see them chosen by the popular ABC show for a home makeover. Before his illness, Greg had been industriously remodeling the Walswick home, but was unable to finish many of his projects.The team of designers and landscapers from ABC enlarged the home, adding a sunroom, tree house and an outdoor theater edifice in the back yard.The kitchen was completely refurbished, with all new appliances, including three ovens to enable Martha to not only cook for her hungry brood, but also to produce as many of her famous pies as she wants! A memorial tree for Greg was planted in the front yard, and a candlelit wall of family pictures was added in the living room.The outpouring of interest from neighbors, friends, and the Servite, Rosary and St. Joseph communities prompted the producers to build a treasure chest for the family, which was filled with written messages from the many well wishers. Two new locations for the rare Massachusetts fern were discovered in 2002 while inventorying the state's hardwood swamps. Both populations are extremely large, consisting of well over 1, 000 clumps. Three new populations of the state endangered many-leaved sedge were discovered in 2002. A population found the previous year was fully inventoried and estimated to consist of 10, 000 culms. This new information has led to the proposal to completely remove this species from the state's Endangered and Threatened Species List. The biggest single find of the year occurred after following a lead discovered in old herbarium records dating back to 1929. Based on information on a specimen label found in Harvard's Gray Herbarium, a group of botanists from the state's Scientific Advisory Committee on Flora relocated a remote site in the Northeast Kingdom that was home to several rare and endangered species. Not only were we able to rediscover populations of the state endangered bentgrass and the rare Scirpus-like.
